Are you Ready?
By: Beckah Shae
Produced by: Jack "Shoc" Shocklee

It's like a train through a long tunnel, can you see the light?
Cause it's getting bright.
It's like a mother with child and you can feel the pain tonight,
Cause it's almost time.

And does anybody hear Me? Does anybody see?
Is there anybody willing, to follow Me?
Is there anybody thirsty? Is anyone hungry?
Is anybody dying? Is anyone ready?

Who is ready?
Cause I am looking for...
Who is ready?
Cause I am coming soon.

There's so many people scared, and it seems so unfair,
As the tragedy fills the air.
And we've never ever seen such extreme immorality,
It just makes me wanna scream for mercy!

And I'm building my army now,
Get ready, you better get ready!
I'm searching all around,
For those in position.
Never have you seen the things you'll see.
Get ready for the greatest victory!

Presidential Candidates: What You Should Know

From National Right to Life, NRLC http://www.nrlc.org/

You will always get the first . . . and best . . . source of news from National Right to Life. As candidates for President hit the ground in early primary states, citizens are looking to see where the candidates stand on abortion and other life issues.

National Right to Life has compiled information about every one of the major candidates who are running to replace pro-abortion Barack Obama in 2012. You can view our candidate comparison here.

Your friends and neighbors should know this information, so please forward it widely. Actually, every American should know, and you can help us get this important information to every corner of the country with your financial support of the National Right to Life Committee.

Information about where the candidates stand is printed as flyers, handed out at public events, placed in newspapers, and of course, distributed via e-mail and the web. As the field narrows, the flyers will evolve and eventually include the abortion record of Obama and his remaining challenger.

If you can donate $50, we could print and distribute nearly 1,000 flyers. We need to be educating the American public NOW about where the candidates stand and how their actions will save or cost precious human lives. Please click here to donate and let the voice of unborn children be heard loud and clear in the 2012 Presidential election! Thank you!

2 Samuel Chapter 6

The Ark Is Brought to Jerusalem

1 David again gathered all the chosen men of Israel—thirty thousand of them. 2 Then he and all his people went to Baalah in Judah[a] to bring back the Ark of God. The Ark is called by the Name, the name of the Lord All-Powerful, whose throne is between the gold creatures with wings.3 They put the Ark of God on a new cart and brought it out of Abinadab's house on the hill. Uzzah and Ahio, sons of Abinadab, led the new cart4 which had the Ark of God on it. Ahio was walking in front of it.5 David and all the Israelites were celebrating in the presence of the Lord. They were playing wooden instruments: lyres, harps, tambourines, rattles, and cymbals.

6 When David's men came to the threshing floor of Nacon, the oxen stumbled. So Uzzah reached out to steady the Ark of God.7 The Lord was angry with Uzzah and killed him because of what he did. So Uzzah died there beside the Ark of God.8 David was angry because the Lord had killed Uzzah. Now that place is called the Punishment of Uzzah.

9 David was afraid of the Lord that day, and he said, "How can the Ark of the Lord come to me now?"10 So David would not move the Ark of the Lord to be with him in Jerusalem. Instead, he took it to the house of Obed-Edom, a man from Gath.11 The Ark of the Lord stayed in Obed-Edom's house for three months, and the Lord blessed Obed-Edom and all his family.

12 The people told David, "The Lord has blessed the family of Obed-Edom and all that belongs to him, because the Ark of God is there." So David went and brought it up from Obed-Edom's house to Jerusalem with joy.13 When the men carrying the Ark of the Lord had walked six steps, David sacrificed a bull and a fat calf.14 Then David danced with all his might before the Lord. He had on a holy linen vest.15 David and all the Israelites shouted with joy and blew the trumpets as they brought the Ark of the Lord to the city.

16 As the Ark of the Lord came into the city, Saul's daughter Michal looked out the window. When she saw David jumping and dancing in the presence of the Lord, she hated him.

17 David put up a tent for the Ark of the Lord, and then the Israelites put it in its place inside the tent. David offered whole burnt offerings and fellowship offerings before the Lord.18 When David finished offering the whole burnt offerings and the fellowship offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord All-Powerful.19 David gave a loaf of bread, a cake of dates, and a cake of raisins to every Israelite, both men and women. Then all the people went home.

20 David went back to bless the people in his home, but Saul's daughter Michal came out to meet him. She said, "With what honor the king of Israel acted today! You took off your clothes in front of the servant girls of your officers like one who takes off his clothes without shame!"

21 Then David said to Michal, "I did it in the presence of the Lord. The Lord chose me, not your father or anyone from Saul's family. The Lord appointed me to be over Israel. So I will celebrate in the presence of the Lord.22 Maybe I will lose even more honor, and maybe I will be brought down in my own opinion, but the girls you talk about will honor me!"

23 And Saul's daughter Michal had no children to the day she died.

Joyce Meyer - Battlefield of the Mind

This is one of Joyce Meyer's best known teachings about how our minds are constantly at battle with the flesh and the devil, and how we have to fight it and overcome it through the power of the Holy Spirit and Biblical principles. Romans 12:2, "Do not be conformed to this world (this age), [fashioned after and adapted to its external, superficial customs], but be transformed (changed) by the [entire] renewal of your mind [by its new ideals and its new attitude], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God, even the thing which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His sight for you]" (AMP).

PrisonerAlert Update: Tohar Haydarov

Location: Uzbekistan
Arrested: March 2010
Days Imprisoned: 525

On March 9, 2010, a criminal court in Uzbekistan sentenced 27-year-old Tohar Haydarov to 10 years in prison for the “Illegal sale of narcotic or psychotropic substances in large quantities,” according to Forum 18 News Service. Members of the Baptist church in Uzbekistan insist that the charges are fabricated and that Haydarov’s sentence was punishment for his religious activity. It is unclear why Haydarov received a 10-year sentence.

According to Forum 18 News, Baptists insist that police planted drugs on Haydarov, and church members insist that he is “a man with a pure conscience and an honest Christian.” Haydarov has appealed his sentence.

Sentence Confirmed; Prisoner Shown Letters
A judge recently confirmed Tohar's ten year prison sentence, for charges church members say are false. "The court correctly stated the criminal act of Tohar Haydarov, and the punishment was given in proportion to the act, taking into account the public danger of the act," the judge wrote.

Prison authorities recently showed Tohar some of the many letters sent to him, but he is not allowed to read them, because "there are too many citations from the Bible in them."

Hollywood Prayer Network Newsletter (august 2011)

Dear HPN members,

HAPPY END OF SUMMER! It’s already time for students’ return to school and for the new TV season to begin. During our 10th year anniversary let’s end August with prayers for the entertainment community and the new Fall TV season.

SUMMARY:
• We praise God for our Jewish friend, Earl who embraced his Messiah last month
• We praise God for Burt Swardstrom, who passed away last month
• Pray for the people involved in the 42nd annual Comic Con
• Keep praying for Justin Bieber as he and his mom make decisions on giving
• Please keep praying for all of the people involved in the summer movies
• Pray for the family members of Amy Winehouse, English singer/songwriter
• Pray for HPN’s friend Sherri Shepherd as she looks to her upcoming wedding
• Let’s pray for the Christians working in Hollywood
• Pray for the Jewish community in Hollywood
• Cassandra has asked for us to pray for her as she gets into production
• HPN Australia member Stephen asks for us to intercede for his daughter
• “I pray for the HPN staff, that you would be very aware the spiritual warfare…”
• “My daughter, a producer in Hollywood, just got nominated for an Emmy…”
• Could you do us a favor and show your support for HPN on a ministry link…
• Thursday, Sept. 8th is HPN’s Quarterly Prayer and Praise night
• HPN is one of three ministries involved in a collaborative fund/friend raiser

PRAISES:

• We praise God for lovingly leading our Jewish friend, dancer/choreographer Earl to embrace his Messiah!!! Earl has been prayed for by many friends and family members and in God’s perfect timing, he became a Messianic Jew last month. We are sooooo excited and thankful, and he is very happy!

• We praise God for Burt Swardstrom, who passed away last month after a long and fruitful life. He was a wonderful, faithful prayer warrior in our Christian entertainment community. As a retired Pastor, he became head of prayer for MasterMedia Intl. and then spent the last couple of years leading prayer groups for the people in our creative and business entertainment community. We will miss Burt very much but we know that his life and prayers made an eternal difference in all of our lives and in our industry.

UPDATE:

• The world’s largest entertainment convention, Comic Con, just completed it’s 42nd annual gathering (July 21 – 14, 2011) at the San Diego Convention Center where over 125,000 attendees come together to celebrate comic books, pop culture, graphic novels and current blockbuster movies based on comic books. It’s the most popular event of the year for filmmakers and audiences alike and we want to keep praying for God’s hand on the people who create, market and support today’s pop culture. For more info on Comic Con visit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Diego_Comic-Con_International

• Keep praying for Justin Bieber as he and his mom make decisions on their generous giving. One thing he supports is the Save the Children fund that aims to help people in East Africa and Somalia that are in danger from famine. We ask the Lord to continue to use his generosity to make an eternal difference in the world and to encourage his fans to help others as well. For more thoughts from Pattie, click HERE.

REQUESTS:

• It’s the end of the summer blockbuster movie releases and the final four films are battling for box office numbers. Please keep praying for all of the people involved in the summer movies – for their relationships, their personal choices, and that the Lord will open their eyes to their moral and ethical decisions and their belief in Him. As we are called to go to all ends of the earth to share the truth of Jesus, let’s pray for those whose careers impact all ends of the earth. For info on the August films, click HERE.

• Please pray for the family members of Amy Winehouse, English singer/songwriter. Amy’s problems with drug and alcohol abuse, violence, and her self-destructive behaviors were regular tabloid news from 2007 until her death on July 23re, at the age of 27. The cause of her death is “yet unexplained.” Amy is only one in the list of musicians who died of either suicide or unknown causes at the age of 27. That’s why we need to be praying for the salvation of entertainment celebrities, because more often than not, celebrity is a curse, not a blessing. HPN believes that only God was meant to get glory, attention, fame and power, which is why most “men” cannot handle it. Learn more about an organization giving attention to this pattern of early death, “The 27 Club”, click HERE.

• Pray for HPN’s friend Sherri Shepherd in her upcoming wedding to television writer Lamar Sally in this month. Sherri is known as one of the co-hosts of The View, but she’s known in the Christian community as a committed believer who stands firm in her faith, despite any ridicule or challenge. Let’s pray for Sherri and Lamar as they commit their lives to one another, to the Lord, and to her 6-year-old son, Jeffrey. May they be shining lights in our industry! To get to know more about Sherri click HERE.

• Let’s pray for Christians working in Hollywood and for the Lord to strengthen their walk with Him, for His Holy Spirit to make them salt and light in the work place and for their stories to be sold and made into quality films, TV shows, songs, video games, news pieces, etc. And let’s pray for the Christian audience to be slow to judge and quick to pray for these professionals to be encouraged to seek God on their vocational and spiritual journeys. It’s a hard place to live and work here and we need all the prayer and encouragement we can get! Click HERE to read about a new film coming out and how we may respond.

• HPN has found a growing desire among Christians to pray for the Jewish community in Hollywood and for Jews in Hollywood to seek after their Messiah. The industry was begun by immigrant Jews and currently about 80% of entertainment decision-makers are Jewish. However, many of them don’t even believe in God. Let’s pray for the wonderful, creative Jews in our industry to discover how much their Creator loves them and that He has a beautiful plan for them through knowing His Son, their Messiah! Two great books of stories about how some Jewish people have found God, read: “Betrayed” by Stan Telchin and “They Thought for Themselves: Ten Amazing Jews” by Sid Roth. As you pray, remember “Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom.”

REQUESTS FROM HPN MEMBERS:

• Atlanta Local Chapter Director, Cassandra, is a filmmaker and she has asked for us to pray for her as she gets into production on her new film, “A Praying Grandmother: The Helen Baylor Story,” a biopic film about Gospel singer Helen Baylor. Let’s ask the Lord to give Cassandra wisdom, strength, a great team, her needed financing and perseverance as she jumps into this huge project. For more info, check out: www.holyhillproductions.com

• HPN Australia member Stephen asks for us to intercede for his daughter, Australian actress Chelsea Bennett, age 12, for Gods' favor, blessing, peace and protection on set of a new feature film by Director PJ Hogan called 'Mental' (My Best Friends Wedding, Peter Pan), filming now in Qld Australia through the end of Sept. Let’s also pray that the whole Bennett family can have a beautiful eternal impact on the whole cast and crew of the film as they work together.

• “I pray for the HPN staff, that you would be very aware the spiritual warfare in film and television is huge, because of the obvious global influence.” Stephen

• “My daughter, a producer in Hollywood, just got nominated for an Emmy! Please pray for her, that the Holy Spirit would intercede and she would give her life to Jesus Christ - so God can do a work in her and through her to glorify His name with the gifts He has given her.” Anne

• Could you do us a favor and show your support for HPN on a ministry link called Giving of Life. They want to help non-profits get more exposure for their ministry by having the registered ministries qualify for a grant that they give through getting VOTES on-line on their site. The more votes, the closer we are to qualifying for their grant. Wild huh? Well, it's legit. So, if you're interested, here's all you do: Click on the site here and then go down to the bottom of our page and VOTE! Thanks so much. Let's see how we do: http://givingoflife.com/browse/hollywood_prayer_network/

UPCOMING EVENTS:

• Thursday, Sept. 8th is HPN’s Quarterly Prayer and Praise night. This night is
focused on INDUSTRY FAMILIES. If you are part of a family with an industry professional of any age in the family, then come pray with us and be prayed for by our prayer team. If you have a heart for young professionals or industry families, then please come to pray, and if you just want to praise God and prayer quietly then come as well. We want the evening to be a joyous time of prayer and praise for all the industry families who want to be encouraged by others in the Christian community in Hollywood. For more information click HERE.

• HPN is one of three ministries involved in a collaborative fund/friend raiser in October. Would you join us in praying that the Lord will use it to expand our vision, build our team of volunteers and donors, and that it will bring more strength and unity into our community.

• For other upcoming events click HERE for the list.

Thanks so much for praying for 10 years! Have a great end of your summer and know that we appreciate you!!

Warmly,
Karen and Caren

“For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. 22 Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, 24 but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.” I Corinthians 1:21-25

Hal Lindsey Report (08-12-2011): Waking Up in '69, Future Tense, Food for a Day, Losing the War, Goodbye Old Dollar and My Old Crystal Ball

This week on 'The Hal Lindsey Report'

Sir Isaac Newton was no dummy.

His famous monograph, "Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica," was published in 1687. It is credited with laying the groundwork for classical mechanics. In the three volume set he also developed Newton's laws of motion and stated Newton's laws of gravitation. Besides inventing the first practical reflecting telescope, he advanced other theories that became foundational to modern physics, calculus, and science in general -- most of which I can't even begin to understand, much less communicate.

Briefly referred to as "Principia," Newton's signature treatise is rightly considered one of the most important works in the history of science.

He is acknowledged as one of the most brilliant men of all time. Yet most people don't know that Sir Isaac Newton was highly religious and a bit of a theologian. He actually wrote more on Bible hermeneutics than on science and mathematics. That's why something he wrote more than 300 years ago is especially important today.

Sir Isaac observed: "About the time of the end, a body of men will be raised up who will turn their attention to the Prophecies, and insist upon their literal interpretation, in the midst of much clamor and opposition."

Sure enough, in the last century or so, there has arisen a group of scholars, theologians, and teachers who have done exactly what Newton predicted -- insist upon the literal interpretation of the Bible's prophecies amid "much clamor and opposition."

We owe a debt of gratitude to men such as Anderson, Chafer, Pentecost, Walvoord, and others who withstood the criticism and, sometimes, condemnation of their peers to bring the Bible's predictions of these last days to the attention of the Church.

Even so, in 1969, when I wrote "The Late Great Planet Earth," there wasn't much general interest in Bible prophecy. With that book, I hoped to attract non-Christians to the claims of Christ and help believers understand the wonder of Bible prophecy.

This week, I'm going to take a look at how some of the predictions I made in that book are shaping up 40 years later. And "shaping up" they are. From the decline of the US dollar to the global war on drugs to the efforts to convert to a global electronic currency to the beginnings of world food shortages. Things are falling into place in the end-times scenario faster than schoolchildren into a lunch line.

All of which means -- as I say week after week -- that it's time to get ready for Christ's soon, sudden return for the believers. Though things are looking bleak on the financial and political horizons, just lift your eyes a little higher and soon we'll see Jesus coming back for us in the clouds of glory. So don't despair -- prepare!

Don't miss this week's Report on TBN, Daystar, Inspiration (on Sundays now!), CPM Network, various local stations, http://www.hallindsey.com or www.hischannel.com. Check your local listings.

God Bless,

Help Free Gao Zhisheng & Others Like Him

ChinaAid helped human rights lawyers fight 36 cases last year alone – and that was just a handful of the number of requests we received to assist persecuted Christians and other victims of injustice in China.

Five years ago, renowned human rights lawyer Gao Zhisheng disappeared into police custody while visiting his sister. Today no one knows where he is. Even the police now claim that they have “lost him.”

Your prayers and assistance have helped us to raise Gao’s case in the world’s capitals and to fight for his freedom!

Your gifts also helped Gao’s wife and children flee the relentless persecution in China and resettle safely in the United States. But they miss Gao very much. His son recently told his mother he wished they were a family, because without a father he felt they were not a family.

So the fight goes on. I am writing you today from a dangerous and sensitive location in Asia where I am organizing another urgent rescue mission for a persecuted Chinese believer.

The needs of our Christian brothers and sisters are urgent and overwhelming.

ChinaAid helped human rights lawyers fight 36 cases last year alone – and that was just a handful of the number of requests we received to assist persecuted Christians and other victims of injustice in China.

As you may know, China's Communist rulers are once again waging an intense campaign against “house church” Christians and anyone else who dares to speak out for freedom, justice or the rule of law. Just last month, Pastor Shi Enhao, deputy chairman of the Chinese House Church Alliance, was given a two-year labor camp sentence.

Pastor Shi needs legal assistance in China to argue his case, and his family needs assistance to carry on his ministry, which includes pastoring a church with thousands of members. ChinaAid can provide that help, with your support.

This is an historic moment in China.

In spite of the risks, pastors and human rights lawyers today are not afraid to stand up and demand their rights, to fight for freedom and justice.

Your gift of any amount will make a difference in the lives of the persecuted in China.

For instance:

$3,000 provides a full legal defense team for Pastor Shi or any Christian pastoror other religious leader persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party.

$1,000 provides legal counsel for churches whose property is threatened, like ShouwangChurch, whose members, despite detention and threats, courageously worship outdoors every week.

$300-$600 provides basic necessities for a month to families like Pastor Shi’s or Gao Zhisheng’s whose head of household is imprisoned.

$150-$300 will provide the basic necessities for two weeks for families being persecuted or whose head of houshold is imprisioned.

Please prayerfully consider making the most generous gift you can today through our secure online contribution.

Donate: http://m4.chinaaid.us/index.php?option=com_acymailing&ctrl=url&urlid=6&mailid=13&subid=22686

We pray for the day when Gao Zhisheng is free, when Pastor Shi is reunited with his wife and congregation, when Chinese Christians and other persecuted faithful have full freedom to practice their religion, and when our work will no longer be necessary. With your help, that day will come. God bless you.

Sincerely
Bob Fu,
President, ChinaAid

Why should I not commit suicide?

Question: "Why should I not commit suicide?"

Answer: Our hearts go out to those who have thoughts of ending their own lives through suicide. If that is you right now, it may speak of many emotions, such as feelings of hopelessness and despair. You may feel like you are in the deepest pit, and you doubt there is any hope of things getting better. No one seems to care or understand where you are coming from. Life just is not worth living...or is it?

If you will take a few moments to consider letting God truly be God in your life right now, He will prove how big He really is, “for nothing is impossible with God” (Luke 1:37). Perhaps scars from past hurts have resulted in an overwhelming sense of rejection or abandonment. That may lead to self-pity, anger, bitterness, vengeful thoughts, or unhealthy fears that have caused problems in some of your most important relationships.

Why should you not commit suicide? Friend, no matter how bad things are in your life, there is a God of love who is waiting for you to let Him guide you through your tunnel of despair and out into His marvelous light. He is your sure hope. His name is Jesus.

This Jesus, the sinless Son of God, identifies with you in your time of rejection and humiliation. The prophet Isaiah wrote of Him in Isaiah 53:2-6, describing Him as a man who was “despised and rejected” by everyone. His life was full of sorrow and suffering. But the sorrows He bore were not His own; they were ours. He was pierced, wounded, and crushed, all because of our sin. Because of His suffering, our lives can be redeemed and made whole.

Friend, Jesus Christ endured all this so that you might have all your sins forgiven. Whatever weight of guilt you carry, know that He will forgive you if you humbly receive Him as your Savior. “...Call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you...” (Psalm 50:15). Nothing you have ever done is too bad for Jesus to forgive. Some of His choicest servants committed gross sins like murder (Moses), murder and adultery (King David), and physical and emotional abuse (the apostle Paul). Yet they found forgiveness and a new abundant life in the Lord. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” (2 Corinthians 5:17).

Why should you not commit suicide? Friend, God stands ready to repair what is “broken,” namely, the life you have now, the life you want to end by suicide. In Isaiah 61:1-3, the prophet wrote, “The LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor…to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve…to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.”

Come to Jesus, and let Him restore your joy and usefulness as you trust Him to begin a new work in your life. He promises to restore the joy you have lost and give you a new spirit to sustain you. Your broken heart is precious to Him: “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise” (Psalm 51:12, 15-17).

Will you accept the Lord as your Savior and Shepherd? He will guide your thoughts and steps—one day at a time—through His Word, the Bible. “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you” (Psalm 32:8). “He will be the sure foundation for your times, a rich store of salvation and wisdom and knowledge; the fear of the LORD is the key to this treasure” (Isaiah 33:6). In Christ, you will still have struggles, but you will now have hope. He is “a friend who sticks closer than a brother” (Proverbs 18:24). May the grace of the Lord Jesus be with you in your hour of decision.

If you desire to trust Jesus Christ as your Savior, speak these words in your heart to God: “God, I need you in my life. Please forgive me for all that I have done. I place my faith in Jesus Christ and believe that He is my Savior. Please cleanse me, heal me, and restore my joy in life. Thank You for Your love for me and for Jesus' death on my behalf.”

What should we learn from the life of Jeremiah?

Question: "What should we learn from the life of Jeremiah?"

Answer: Jeremiah the prophet lived in the final days of the crumbling nation of Israel. He was, appropriately, the last prophet that God sent to preach to Southern kingdom, which comprised the tribes of Judah and Benjamin. God had repeatedly warned Israel to stop their idolatrous behavior, but they would not listen, so He tore the 12 tribes asunder, sending the 10 Northern tribes into captivity at the hands of the Assyrians. Then God sent Jeremiah to give Judah the last warning before He cast them out of the land, decimating the nation and sending them into captivity in the pagan kingdom of Babylon. Jeremiah, a faithful, God-fearing man, was called to tell Israel that because of their unrepentant sin, their God had turned against them and was now prepared to remove them from the land, at the hands of a pagan king whom He called, “My servant” (Jeremiah 26:7).

No doubt Jeremiah, who was only about 17 when God called him, had great inner turmoil over the fate of his people, and he begged them to listen. He is known as “the weeping prophet,” because he cried tears of sadness, not only because he knew what was about to happen, but because no matter how hard he tried, the people would not listen. Furthermore, he found no human comfort. God had forbidden him to marry or have children (Jeremiah 16:2), and his friends had turned their backs on him. So along with the burden of the knowledge of impending judgment, he also must have felt alone and lonely. God knew that this was the best course for Jeremiah, because He went on to tell him how horrible conditions would be in a short time, with babies, children, and adults dying “grievous” deaths, their bodies unable to even be buried, and their flesh devoured by the birds (Jeremiah 16:3-4).

Obviously, the people of Israel had become so hardened by the numbing effects of sin that they no longer believed God, nor did they fear Him. Jeremiah preached for 40 years, and not once did he see any real success in changing or softening the hearts and minds of his stubborn, idolatrous people. The other prophets of Israel had witnessed some successes, at least for a little while, but not Jeremiah. He was speaking to a brick wall; however, his words were not wasted. They were pearls being cast before swine in a sense, and they were convicting every person who heard them and refused to heed the warning.

Jeremiah tried to make the people understand their problem was a lack of belief, trust, and faith in God, along with an absence of fear which caused them to take Him for granted. It is very easy to be lulled into a false sense of security, especially when the focus is not on God. The nation of Israel, just like many nations today, had stopped putting God first, and had replaced Him with false gods, those that would not make them feel guilty or convict them of sin. God had delivered His people from bondage in Egypt, had performed miracles before them, and had even parted the waters of the sea for them. In spite of all these displays of God’s power, they returned to the false practices they had learned in Egypt, even making vows to the false ‘queen of heaven,’ along with the other rites and rituals that were part of the Egyptian culture and religion. God finally turned them over to their idolatry, saying “Go ahead then, do what you promised! Keep your vows!” (Jeremiah 44:25).

Jeremiah’s constant depression, plus his loneliness and isolation, finally got the best of him and he became discouraged. He sunk into the quagmire where many believers seem to get stuck when they think their efforts are not making a difference and time is ticking away. Jeremiah, just like every other human being, was emotionally spent, even to the point of doubting God (Jeremiah 15:18), but God was not done with him. Jeremiah 15:19 records a lesson for each believer to remember in those times when they feel alone, useless, and discouraged and their faith is wavering: “Therefore this is what the LORD says: ‘If you repent, I will restore you that you may serve me; if you utter worthy, not worthless, words, you will be my spokesman. Let this people turn to you, but you must not turn to them.’” God was saying to Jeremiah, come back to Me, and I will restore to you the joy of your salvation. These are similar to the words penned by David when he repented of his sin with Bathsheba (Psalm 51:12).

What we learn from the life of Jeremiah is the comfort of knowing that, just like every believer, even great prophets of God can experience rejection, depression, and discouragement in their walk with the Lord. This is a normal part of growing spiritually, because our sinful nature fights against our new nature, that which is born of the Spirit of God, according to Galatians 5:17: “For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want.” But just as Jeremiah found, we can know that the faithfulness of our God is infinite; even when we are unfaithful to Him, He remains steadfast (2 Timothy 2:13).

Jeremiah was given the task of delivering an unpopular, convicting message to Israel, one that caused him great mental anguish, as well as making him despised in the eyes of his people. God says that His truth sounds like “foolishness” to those who are lost, but to believers they are the very words of life (1 Corinthians 1:18). He also says that the time will come when people will not tolerate the truth (2 Timothy 4:3-4). Those in Israel in Jeremiah’s day did not want to hear what he had to say, and his constant warning of judgment annoyed them. This is true of the world today, as believers who are following God’s instructions are warning the lost and dying world of impending judgment (Revelation 3:10). Even though most are not listening, we must persevere in proclaiming truth in order to rescue some from the terrible judgment that will inevitably come.
