More Than a Spiritual Problem

According to biblical history, the world has much more than a “spiritual” problem—although the root of the problem is spiritual. The whole physical universe is messed up, too. Human beings aren’t incidental late-comers in nature. Mankind was created to be ruler over the cosmos—with “all things under his feet” in peace and harmony (Psalm 8:6). Now, though, we don’t see all things under human feet (Hebrews 2:5–8). The peace, or shalom, of the original creation’s order was disrupted by humanity’s early insurrection against our Creator. When the man and the woman exalted themselves as gods—in league with the serpent—God pronounced a curse upon everything under the rule of humans—and that curse impacted everything.

Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. (Galatians 6:7–8). Today’s big question: are you sowing to the Spirit or the flesh? These verses most directly refer to salvation. The unbeliever, sowing to the flesh, will reap eternal punishment, whereas the believer, sowing to the Spirit, will reap eternal life. All those who do not place their faith in Christ Jesus will reap corruption. However, these verses do apply to our lives as well.

Hal Lindsey Report (08-05-2011): Ousting Attaturk, Turkey Turns, Friends or Enemies?, Russia Arising & Rome Reviving

This week on 'The Hal Lindsey Report'

When I wrote "The Late Great Planet Earth" in 1969, I was roundly criticized for my predictions about the roles of Iran and Turkey in the 'last days' scenario. Many of those critics have now fallen silent. It doesn't take a prophecy scholar to see that, indeed, Iran and Turkey are moving into the positions foretold by the ancient prophets.

This week, we're going to take a little trip through history. I want to properly set the stage so you will understand the importance of events that have taken place in the last few weeks in Turkey. After the defeat of the Ottoman Empire, Kemal Attaturk founded the modern Turkish Republic. It was built on democratic principles and pointedly constructed as a "secular" government. It intentionally and constitutionally isolated itself from Islamic influence and charged the nation's military with enforcing that separation.

Turkey's military has found it necessary to seize the government several times since its founding. Each time, Islamic forces have been curtailed and the government returned to secular civilian rule. But since the rise of the Justice Party, an Islamic-leaning political party also known as AKP, the Turkish military has seen its role as the guarantor of Turkey's constitution slowly eroded.

In fact, the ranks of Turkey's military officers' corps have been thinned considerably by hundreds of arrests in the last several months. The officers have been charged with conspiracy to stage a coup d'etat in 2003! Oddly enough, that's precisely the military's job when it sees Islam becoming too strong an influence on the state.

Last month, dozens of senior officers -- generals and admirals -- were arrested on conspiracy charges. Last week, the Turkish military Chief of Staff and the heads of all the services resigned abruptly. They were replaced by officers more sympathetic to the cause of Islam.

What makes these developments noteworthy is the fact that Turkey has been a solid Western ally for more than half a century. In fact, it became the only majority-Muslim member of NATO in 1952. The United States even has military bases in Turkey. And for many years, Turkey has been Israel's only Islamic military ally. So when Turkey begins to pull away from the West, turn on Israel (as we've seen in recent years), cozy up to Iran and other Islamic nations, and start drifting into Russia's sphere of influence, it bears prophetic significance.

Of course, I was also taken to task by other critics who belittled the importance I placed on Russia and the European Union back in 1969. I'm not sure where those detractors are now, because, true to Bible prophecy, Russia has risen from the ashes of the fallen Soviet Union. Likewise, the European Union, though currently gripped in the throes of economic upheaval, is still moving forward to solidify its role in the final days of this Age. In fact, on July 1, 2011, a major milestone was quietly passed in the evolution of that body.

Remember Daniel's interpretation of King Nebuchadnezzar's dream of an image constructed of various metals? Remember his description of the final kingdom consisting of "ten kings?" Remember hearing that this could not be the EU because it has 27 members? Well, on July 1, the EU formally invested certain critical powers always reserved to the core group known as the "Western European Union," in a new 'Permanent Council.' By its own choice and in its own official documents, that group is hereinafter to be known as "The Ten."

Eerily familiar, isn't it?

In fact, there is a lot we read in today's headlines and see in each day's newscast that is eerily familiar, especially to those who seriously study the Bible's prophecies for the final days of the Age of Grace.

Each time I review those prophecies and each day when I watch the news, I'm reminded that our time on this earth is growing short. If you have not received the free gift of pardon that Jesus Christ died to purchase for you, do it now. Today is the only day we're promised. Today is the day of salvation.

Pakistan—Widow Struggles with Grief—VOM Sources

Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.

Sana had been married only a month when she became a widow. On March 21, 2011, a group of young Muslim men attacked a Salvation Army Church in Hyderabad and shot to death her husband, 25-year-old Jamil, and another man. Jamil had been supporting Sana, his parents and two siblings by working as a sweeper. When our VOM team in Pakistan visited Sana and her family recently to see how Sana was doing, they found that she was very emotionally unstable. “One minute she is laughing and the next she is crying,” the team leader reported. “Her behavior is very erratic.” Our VOM team will help arrange counseling for Sana and will continue to pray for her. Please pray for Sana and her family, as well as for Sosan, wife of the other man killed. Sosan has six children.

Several Christians have been assaulted and threatened in Sri Lanka in recent weeks. On July 10, a pastor was assaulted at a meeting in Ampara District, Eastern Province. During the meeting, which was held for the purpose of discussing land distribution, the pastor was assaulted by a Buddhist monk who had convened the meeting. The monk kicked the pastor, causing serious injuries to his arm and stomach. Assailants later followed the pastor to his home and continued to verbally abuse him and his family. Just over a week later, on July 19, a mob of about 50 people attacked the homes of five Christian families in Badulla District, Uva Province. The mob damaged the homes’ roofs by throwing stones, and they busted windows with stones and clubs. The attackers also destroyed a grocery shop belonging to one of the families and stole merchandise. The shop owner was seriously injured in the attack, and some families fled to the jungle until the attack had ended. The mob reportedly planned to force these families to renounce Christianity or leave the village. Pray that these Christians will trust the Lord in all things and will lovingly and boldly proclaim the gospel amid persecution.

Eritrea—Mass Arrests Continue—Release International, Release Eritrea

To hear the groaning of the prisoner,
To release those appointed to death

Eritrean officials have arrested 90 Christians since May, many of them college students. In June, 26 students from the Mai-Mefhi College of Technology were arrested and detained at an unknown location. And in May, authorities detained 64 believers in Adi Abeyto, a village near the capital, Asmara. Only six of the 90 arrested have been released, and the rest are thought to be at a police station or in the notorious Mitire military prison. It is not clear why the Christians were detained, but Release sources said college students have been arrested previously for refusing to take part in Independence Day celebrations. Independence Day was May 24. In 2002, the Eritrean government banned all Christian groups that do not belong to a state-approved church. Since then, thousands of Christians have been imprisoned, and 16 have died in custody. Pray that Christians in Eritrea will remain strong and that those in prison will hold fast to their faith. Pray for their release.

Asia Bibi, a Christian in Pakistan, was sentenced to death for alleged blasphemy. While she waits in prison, her supporters on the outside are slowly dwindling, murdered by Muslim radicals who will stop at nothing to see her killed.

False Teaching

There are so many false teachings and false prophets out in the world today. The only way to truly know whether or not there is any truth to it is by comparing it to the Word, and not allowing yourself to be easily swayed by a teaching just because you heard it. Everything must be proved by the Word. Also, remember the Bible teaches that if a "prophet" prophesizes something that does not come to pass than that message did not come from God.

Terror in Norway: Terrorist Was Not a "Right-Wing Christian Fundamentalist"

Norwegian terror suspect’s call for an armed crusade by “cultural Christendom” creates confusion in early news reports. Anders Behring Breivik has been arrested for last week’s terrorist attacks in Norway. A car bombing in Oslo and a shooting spree at a political youth rally have resulted in at least 76 deaths. Initial reports suggested the self-confessed terrorist was a “right-wing Christian fundamentalist.” Closer examination of the suspect’s own words in a video, as well as a 1500-page online manifesto attributed to him, have revealed that Breivik’s beliefs and stated motivations have nothing to do with Biblical Christianity or Christian faith and practice.

1. We already had to cancel last weekend's concerts, because a routine alternator fix in our bus caused unexpected problems.

2. We just had to cancel this weekend's concerts, because of continued problems with the alternator.

3. This morning I learned that unrelated problems at next weekend's venues will force us to cancel both of those concerts.

We've been doing this for almost 20 years, and we've only ever had to cancel a handful of concerts. Now we could miss three straight weeks.

Loss of concert income, not to mention the repairs, is killing us. We don't make a lot of money, and this band supports seven families with 18 kids. Many of you face much greater hardships than we do, and I'm not asking you to help, just to please pray for us.

These are all circumstances beyond our control, but they are all in God's control, and we believe He will see us through this.

Hal Lindsey Report (07-29-2011): Media Hype-ocrisy, "Christian Fundamentalist?," Growing Colder, What's in a Name?

This week on 'The Hal Lindsey Report'

We all gasped in disbelief when news of the attacks in Norway began to filter in through the news services. First, a massive bomb explodes outside the offices of Norway's Prime Minister. Video from the scene showed gaping holes in office buildings surrounding the plaza in Oslo.

Then, word came of gunmen on a nearby lake island randomly firing on young people attending a summer youth camp.

Details were sketchy. The death toll at the bombing site seemed amazingly low -- seven dead -- and at the island site, unbelievably high. How could a gunman or gunmen continue to shoot unabated for almost an hour and a half? Was there no security? Where were the police? Was this another Mumbai-style attack staged by teams of terrorists? At first report, the Norwegian police said the death toll on the island was approaching 100!

Soon enough, more than one Islamic group claimed responsibility for the attacks. Yet, news coverage seemed rather lacking, both in information and intensity.

When the Oslo police finally reached the lake island, the lone gunman almost eagerly laid down his weapon and peacefully surrendered to the first policemen who approached him. To their surprise, he was a blond-haired, blue-eyed Norwegian. Apparently not a Muslim terrorist.

As details began to emerge, we learned that, indeed, eight had died in the bombing. The death toll on the island dropped to 68, with some still missing. In all, one man took the lives of at least 75 innocent Norwegians and one Dane. The senselessness of this tragedy is undeniable and almost overwhelming.

In a macabre way, though, the thing that seemed most important to the international press was that the suspect was not Islamic. Rather, they gleefully reported that he was a right-wing nut job. And, of course, in the press, "right-wing" also translates "Christian."

So, that's what the media around the world began to breathlessly report: that the unspeakable tragedy had been perpetrated by a "Christian fundamentalist."

In reality, though, despite the international headlines, the one thing that's missing from Anders Breivik's profile is any direct connection with Christianity. But that's a minor detail as far as the global media is concerned.

In case you have some doubts, the very foundations of Christianity preclude the possibility of any such thing as 'Christian fundamentalist terrorism.' I'll tell you why this week.

But the Oslo massacres are just one incident in an ever-growing catalog of evil that is engulfing our planet. The Apostle Paul warned that these days would come and he described them in remarkable detail. The fact that evil men and seducers continue to grow worse and worse -- despite man's efforts to stem the tide -- is proof positive that man didn't author the Bible. God did. And it confirms the veracity of the Bible's prophecies.

In case you didn't know, I spent a decade of my early ministry working on American college campuses with Campus Crusade for Christ (CCC). Some of you have written to ask what I think about CCC's recent decision to change its public name to "Cru." After some reflection, I decided to respond on the show this week with a story entitled, "What's in a Name?"

By the way, don't forget in these last days that there IS power in a name -- the name of Jesus! Don't be afraid to call upon that Name or to proclaim that Name to others. It is the only Name by which we are saved.

Uzbekistan—Police Harass Pastor—VOM Sources

Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.

On July 9, security police harassed a pastor and confiscated his laptop while he was waiting for his wife at a market. As Pastor Salavat waited for his wife in their car, two men in military uniforms approached the pastor and asked him to step out of the car. The men grabbed Salavat and treated him roughly. Salavat demanded to see their IDs, which they showed him before searching his car without permission or cause. “It looked as though they were looking for something specific,” Salavat said. It soon became clear that they were searching for his laptop, which they confiscated without offering a warrant or receipt. Ten days later, Salavat’s laptop was returned without explanation. Pray for Salavat and his family, and pray for all Uzbek Christians who aren’t able to worship freely.

South Sudan—Christians Remain at Risk—VOM Canada, Middle East Concern

South Sudan officially gained independence from Sudan on July 9, becoming a new nation. The secession follows a long history of violent conflict, including two civil wars between the largely Islamic north and the Christian and animist majority in the south. Christians, in particular, have endured severe oppression. Although many have expressed hope for a more peaceful future, it is clear that Christians on both sides of the new border remain at risk. Violence erupted in several areas in the months leading to South Sudan’s independence. Government agents and Islamic militants looted churches and killed Christians in parts of South Kordofan state. Many are concerned that churches in Sudan may face further restrictions on freedom of worship if the government implements a strict form of Islamic law. As Christians continue to flee to South Sudan, it is also feared that believers who remain in the north may be especially vulnerable to violence, pressure and accusations of defaming Islam. Pray that Christians in both Sudan and South Sudan will continue to entrust themselves to Christ, knowing that he is sovereign over kings of the earth.

Nigeria—Maiduguri Christians Face Extremist Threat—Release International, Compass Direct News

Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation.

Christians are fleeing the northern city of Maiduguri amid threats of further large-scale attacks by Islamic extremists. Most churches in Maiduguri have been boarded up and are under police or military guard as rumors spread that Boko Haram militants are planning a “massive attack” for the end of July. The widely anticipated assault would mark the two-year anniversary of the death of the group’s founder, Mohammed Yusuf, who died in police custody. Church attendance in Maiduguri has reportedly fallen dramatically following a series of bomb attacks on churches there. Leaders of the Christian Association of Nigeria have advised churches to suspend or reschedule services, and several have changed service times to try to outwit potential attackers. Church leaders fear that this extremist threat could deepen the divide between Christians and Muslims in Nigeria. “This Boko Haram has to be dealt with before they plunge the entire nation into a very serious crisis,” a church leader in Maiduguri told Compass Direct. Pray for the safety of Christians in Maiduguri, and pray that Muslim extremists will see that they can be reconciled to God only through Jesus Christ.

If Only They Would Just Realize

I feel that some of the main reasons why someone doesn't come to a belief in God/Jesus is because they don't connect themselves with the love and authority of God. First of all, people don't want to have to admit that they are sinners in need of God's forgiveness. I think that a lot of people can and will admit that they are not perfect and guilty of wrong-doing in life. But, they want to believe that they are somehow just automatically forgiven of their sins because 1) they figure it's not as bad as some sins (like murder, adultery, pedophilia) so it's okay 2) they figure that, give it enough time, it's easier to move on and kinda' sorta' forget about it and 3) they constantly compare themselves to other imperfect people rather than comparing themselves to the true standard that is holy God to realize how much they need God's sovereign forgiveness. The other reason why I think some people don't want to come to the Christian faith and truly live for God is because they don't "get it." They don't have the supernatural connection of the Holy Spirit to truly realize the truth of God and His all-encompassing love. Another main reason is because I think people look too much towards churches and Christian people to see God and don't look at God Himself. And because there is no perfect church and no perfect Christian, non-believers can see all of the mistakes and because they don't have the know-how to distinguish God from the mistakes then it all just seems so stagnant and condemning. Sometimes I think, oh man if only they knew what I knew. If only they had been through what I had been through (with God) then they would understand, they would "get it." But, they don't, until they can open themselves up to God and receive His hand. Of course, I'm not saying any of this to offend or disrespect the non-believer, but simply to give my two-cents on some of the reasons why I think someone doesn't believe in God or truly live for God in their lives. I mean, I wasn't always a believer myself. I still remember what it was like when I wasn't believer and it wasn't too long ago. I pray for salvation for those who aren't saved; I pray for those who are saved that they will continue to learn and grow in the faith; I pray for the conviction of the Holy Spirit for those who are not saved, that they will open their hearts and minds to God and have the willingness to believe in Him.
